What Is Tarp Thickness?

Tarpaulin thickness describes the physical thickness of the sheet or coated fabric. In North American buying language it is often expressed as tarp mil thickness; industrial PVC-coated fabrics may also be specified in millimeters. Mil Is Not the Same as GSM: Why Industrial Buyers Need Both

Mil measures thickness; GSM measures mass per square meter. They answer different questions. Choose Tarpaulin Thickness by Failure Mode, Not by Label

“Heavy duty” is a marketing label unless the construction supports the real stress. Before increasing tarp thickness, identify how the cover is most likely to fail: abrasion, wind flapping, grommet pull-out, seam leakage, UV degradation, puncture, or repeated folding.

Wind & flapping

A thicker sheet will not compensate for poor tensioning. Large covers need suitable attachment spacing, reinforced edges and a fastening plan that limits flutter.
